This is an authentic (NOT a modern reprint) vintage 1959 photogravure (also known as a héliogravure) by the internationally renowned Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh. This vintage sheet fed gravure plate was originally issued as part of a now rare bound photogravure portfolio, engraved and printed in quality photogravure by the highly regarded engraving house of Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, Haarlem, Netherlands in 1959. The paper is of fine quality and the prints themselves are simply beautiful to behold. Karsh himself wrote the following words regarding these richly crafted photogravures: «for the first time the photographs that have been my life’s work were reproduced by a mechanical process with complete fidelity. So true is the result, indeed, that friends have said they find it difficult to distinguish between these photogravure plates and the hand-printed originals from my darkroom. The production of these plates involved considerable technical achievement. But technology is only a means to an end. More significant and gratifying to me is that many thousands of people, who previously may not have seen an original Karsh photographic print but had to rely on the often inadequate reproduction of standard printing methods, were now able to see the fine details, the subtle graduations, the delicate nuances which reveal underlying character». Yousuf Karsh’s iconic photographic portraits are held in museums and important photography collections throughout the world. This photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight «honeycomb» cell structure, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone – all indicative of a high quality sheet fed gravure plate. The watermark word «Finephoto» does not appear on the actual print. We list beautiful original vintage photographs, photogravures and antique prints everyday! To supplement and replenish those holdings we are regularly acquiring new collections and portfolios from around the world as opportunities present themselves. As a result of this ongoing procurement of vintage materials, when we feel we are «deep enough» in specific areas we will be open to accept offers which are reasonably close to the listing price of an item. So, if you decide to use the Best Offer option in those listings which contain one and make us a reasonable offer, we will do our best to accept. ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine «honeycomb» screen controls the amount of ink to be transfered to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to it’s significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world’s most renown photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process. OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU: We don’t just want to meet your expectations, we want to exceed them with each and every purchase! Information about Bill Hendricks:»Bill Hendricks was a former USMCR Colonel who was the key figure in setting up the «Toys for Tots» program. Aside from his USMCR career he also worked in the film industry for many years, initially as a documentary producer for the United States Army, then as a production executive at Warner Bros., where he eventually became the final producer of the Looney Tunes series. In 1947 Hendricks, then a Major in the USMCR, was asked by his wife Diane to donate some toys (including ones she had made herself) to an organization that gave out toys to needy children. However, his research found that no such organisation existed, and he resolved to start one himself. He led a toy collection in the Los Angeles area with several family and friends that eventually amassed some 5,000 toys. This pilot program proved so successful that the Marine Corps adopted it as an official campaign the following year, and Hendricks helped make it even more of a success by using his contacts through Warner Bros. to persuade many celebrities to support the charity. His career as a documentary producer saw him win an Academy Honorary Award in 1961 for his part in the Marine Corps documentary A Force in Readiness. In 1967 he was asked by Warner Bros. to take over as head of their newly reformed animation studio, as well as becoming overall head of the Looney Tunes franchise. The new animation studio lasted only two years and produced few cartoons of note before shutting down in 1969. However, Hendricks remained in a supervisory role, overseeing production on The Bugs Bunny Show and other television shows featuring Looney Tunes cartoons. He remained in this role until 1977, when he finally retired from the film industry at the age of 73″ -marinestogetherweserved Bill Hendricks was the recipient of the Grand Award, Motion Picture Herald Award. .Scarce Helmut Newton 2009 ART BOOK + Making of Helmut Newtons Sumo Magazine
Helmut Newton (1920-2004) always showed a healthy disdain for the easy or predictable, so it’s no surprise that the SUMO was an irresistible project. The idea of a book the size of a private exhibition, with spectacular images reproduced to state-of-the-art origination and printing standards, emerged from an open, experimental dialogue between photographer and publisher. With the 2009 issue of the baby SUMO weighing in at 5.3kgs, compared to the 1999 issue at approx 30 kgs, Newton had created a landmark book that stood head and shoulders above anything previously attempted, both in terms of conceptual extravagance and technical specifications. Published in an edition of 10,000 signed and numbered copies, the SUMO sold out soon after publication and quickly multiplied its value. It now features in numerous collections around the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The legendary copy number one, signed by more than 100 of the book’s featured celebrities, broke the record for the most expensive book published in the 20th century, sold at an auction in Berlin on April 6, 2000 for 620,000 German marks-about 317,000 euros. Now the 2009 10 years of SUMO, was the result of a project conceived by Helmut Newton some years ago. Revised by his wife June, the volume gathers 464 images and a new booklet that takes us through the making-of this publishing venture-a spectacular tribute to the larger-than-life Helmut Newton, now in a friendly format. The book measures 38cm x 27.5cm wide The odd mark but would rate it 8/9 out of 10. Hardcover Book with original dust cover, 464 pages + the booklet “The Making of Helmut Newtons Sumo”. Complete, no outer box or stand. Local Brisbane pick-up welcomed. Always happy to combine postage where possible & practical. HNCO are not responsible for import duties or customs charges. This is the buyers / importers responsibility. _gsrx_vers_854 (GS 7.0.18 (854))
