My trip to Africa was the best trip of my life …so far. I prepared for a year. Each safari outing we went on was better than the one before. It was as if the animals and nature were preforming for my camera. I have been traveling and photographing locations and animals ever since I met my wife, Rebekah over 30 years ago. She had just been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa – A degenerative eye disease which will lead to blindness. When we met she could still see but the progression was just starting to occur. There is no cure, it just progresses at different rates for each person. This genetic disease is passed down through generations. The only way to stop it was to not have any children of our own. This was not an easy choice for me to come to terms with. I always thought I would have children. I came from a large family and thought that children was the natural way my life would progress. I feel the photographs I make are important as they are reminders for my wife to have of the places we saw when her sight was better. They now fill the walls of our home just as our friends have pictures of their children on their walls. At home when I look across the room and see a photograph that I took on one of our trips and describe what I see Rebekah will remember with her detailed recollections of her experience that are enriched by her other senses. She will remember sounds, smells and feelings that she had. She will even describe the meal in detail that she ate at the lodge that day. Hearing her take on the experience gives me a greater insight and perspective of her perception which brings us even closer as a couple. In my family my siblings have not had any children. I am the last youngest male in my family tree which means that without children my family name will end. I have nobody to pass my legacy of images onto. I will be the first to tell you what I did to get this shot was really stupid and dont ever do it! I saw this train coming from a long way away. I had a big lens on the camera and took the shot but wasnt happy with it. So I changed the lens and laid down on the ties in between the rails and took this shot. The train was still a good distance away but I probably gave the engineer a heart attack. I always have been willing to take a chance to get a great shot. The fields are organized into rows of lavender plants. It’s so enjoyable to walk in the middle, so easy to move around. All of the plants are teaming with fat harmless bumble bees that are in heaven with the abundance in the field. If you are planning on visiting, the best time is from mid-June through July when the fields are in full bloom, as the season typically winds down in August. Bahamas Palm Cay Resort Beach Living
Capturing this beautiful luxury resort, Palm Cay, in the Bahamas was an awesome experience. I am a proud American veteran citizen with a gift of and love for photographing the beauty around me. I had the privilege of growing up on the west coast of Africa where there are beautiful beaches. Unfortunately, because I had to leave Africa at a young age to come to America to attend college, I did not get to enjoy the beaches a lot. Visiting the Bahamas, a country in the Caribbean which has 16 major islands, reminded me of my environment when I was growing up. The trip was long and full of anticipation. The trip to the resort was long. I was intrigued by the fact that we were driving on the left side of the road. The resort, Palm Cay, is located right on the beach in the capital city of Nassau. It was so beautiful. Capturing this picture while relaxing on the beach was heartwarming. Bannerman’s Island. It is an island in the Hudson river close to the east shore between Cold Spring and Beacon NY. I have been photographing this island for years. There is history behind this island. The native Americans who inhabited the area thought the island to be haunted. The castle was built by an arms dealer very early in the 20th century. His warehouse was originally in Brooklyn. He got his start by buying up surplus arms from the Spanish American war. He was asked to get out of Brooklyn so He bought the island and built a Scottish style castle and home on the island and moved his business there. For whatever reason his business failed and the castle stood empty for years. There were caretakers looking after the Island and from what my mother tells me her Great Uncle was one. I dont remember what year it was but when I was a little boy I was going across the Newburgh Beacon Bridge with my Grandparents and I remember my grandmother saying to my grandfather «Oh Earl look! the castle is burning» . The castle has been deteriorating ever since and it has been one of my favorite photographic subjects since my first kodak instamatic. This picture was taken just before most of the castle collapsed. There is still one main wall standing and things have been done to shore up that wall but it should have been done long ago. hopefully this will help remember what once was . In June of 2014 I started to take a boat trip up the Hudson River through The Champlain Canal in our old family boat (1961 Skee Craft Mahogany boat) We got as far as the bridges at Ravena and I started feeling something off in the boat so we turned around and headed back. I stopped and refueled in Hudson and we continued on. We got just past the cement plant in Cementon and the motor just lost power and quit. I pulled the cowlings and restarted the motor and the flywheel was wobbling. Broken crankshaft. Worse yet an Ulster County Sheriff went by in their boat. I fired a flare and tried to flag him down and he just kept going! Some guy came by and towed me too a friends house in Saugerties. I had been taking pictures the whole trip and when I finally got home. I sent every picture to the editor of Hudson Valley Magazine on a whim. He called me about a month later and asked me if I could take the boat and photograph the towns along the Hudson from the boat for and article in the April 2015 Hudson Valley Magazine! I said Absolutely! Then I thought to myself…. OH NO! My boat is still broken. I told one of my cousins what was going on and he said «borrow mine» I didnt even ask he volunteered!.
