Federico Patellani 1962 8×12″ photo Great Temple Abu Simbel Nubia Ramses II Federico Patellani 1962 8×12″ photo Great Temple Abu Simbel Nubia Ramses II Click images to enlarge Description Federico Patellani, vintage 8 by 12 inch black and white glossy press photograph of the four Great Temple colossal statues of Ramses II at Abu Simbel in Nubia, Egypt where the Aswan Dams were then being constructed, stamped on the back and dated 1962 by the photographer with a printed caption written by the photographer attached, in very good condition (the upper left and lower right corners are very lightly creased). The photo was taken to highlight the plight of the statues that had to be moved before the dams were completed and the original site of the statutes was flooded. It was part of a series Patellani took in Africa that he titled Nubia is Doomed and numbered 5957 and then sold to the PIX Inc. Photo Agency. This photo is 5957-18. Federico Patellani (1911-1977) was an Italian photographer and painter who took up photography in 1935, the same year in which he served in the war in East Africa. His first photographs were published in the Milanese newspaper L’Ambrosiano. In 1939 he became part of the team of photographers on the weekly magazine Tempo, which was inspired by the first great international illustrated magazines, in particular Life. Here, he devised the fototesta, an innovative way of presenting news stories using a large number of photographs with a few brief captions, the story thus being told mainly through images, with the photographer as narrator. This was the first time in Italy that the photographer was considered as an intellectual in his own right and not simply a subordinate craftsman.
