New York 1800’s 11th Ave. New York Central Railroad Death Avenue Cowboy Photo All photographs are processed at a professional photo lab and have standard white borders unless otherwise stated. We DO NOT sell desktop printer, discount chain or kiosk processed photos. Here we have a great photo of days long gone. Shown are horse drawn carriage, vendors and tenements along 11th. Avenue in New York City. The street was also used by New York Central Railroad freight trains, shown at far right, which were required to be disguised as trolley cars in order not to alarm horses. The street was nicknamed «Death Avenue» due to a high number of fatalities involving pededstrians. The railroad employed “West Side cowboys”, one of which is shown at far left, who would ride ahead and use flags to warn of the oncoming train. The rail line was ultimately replaced with an elevated.
