I will be the first to tell you what I did to get this shot was really stupid and dont ever do it! I saw this train coming from a long way away. I had a big lens on the camera and took the shot but wasnt happy with it. So I changed the lens and laid down on the ties in between the rails and took this shot. The train was still a good distance away but I probably gave the engineer a heart attack. I always have been willing to take a chance to get a great shot. Bannerman’s Island. It is an island in the Hudson river close to the east shore between Cold Spring and Beacon NY. I have been photographing this island for years. There is history behind this island. The native Americans who inhabited the area thought the island to be haunted. The castle was built by an arms dealer very early in the 20th century. His warehouse was originally in Brooklyn. He got his start by buying up surplus arms from the Spanish American war. He was asked to get out of Brooklyn so He bought the island and built a Scottish style castle and home on the island and moved his business there. For whatever reason his business failed and the castle stood empty for years. There were caretakers looking after the Island and from what my mother tells me her Great Uncle was one. I dont remember what year it was but when I was a little boy I was going across the Newburgh Beacon Bridge with my Grandparents and I remember my grandmother saying to my grandfather «Oh Earl look! the castle is burning» . The castle has been deteriorating ever since and it has been one of my favorite photographic subjects since my first kodak instamatic. This picture was taken just before most of the castle collapsed. There is still one main wall standing and things have been done to shore up that wall but it should have been done long ago. hopefully this will help remember what once was . In June of 2014 I started to take a boat trip up the Hudson River through The Champlain Canal in our old family boat (1961 Skee Craft Mahogany boat) We got as far as the bridges at Ravena and I started feeling something off in the boat so we turned around and headed back. I stopped and refueled in Hudson and we continued on. We got just past the cement plant in Cementon and the motor just lost power and quit. I pulled the cowlings and restarted the motor and the flywheel was wobbling. Broken crankshaft. Worse yet an Ulster County Sheriff went by in their boat. I fired a flare and tried to flag him down and he just kept going! Some guy came by and towed me too a friends house in Saugerties. I had been taking pictures the whole trip and when I finally got home. I sent every picture to the editor of Hudson Valley Magazine on a whim. He called me about a month later and asked me if I could take the boat and photograph the towns along the Hudson from the boat for and article in the April 2015 Hudson Valley Magazine! I said Absolutely! Then I thought to myself…. OH NO! My boat is still broken. I told one of my cousins what was going on and he said «borrow mine» I didnt even ask he volunteered!. So in Sept of 2014 I went from Highland NY to New York City back up river to Albany then back to Highland by boat photographing the towns along the river. Talk about awesome? I got to do an awesome trip doing two things that I absolutely love and got paid to do it! Then the icing on the cake ? 7 pics were published in the April 2015 Hudson Valley Magazine and 10 were published in the online edition!!!!! I grew up on Orange lake. I have Orange lake water in my blood. I lived there til I was 11 years old. My parents divorced and my dad re married. We moved up to Salt Point NY but my Grand parents still lived on the lake so my summers were spent down at the lake with my Grand parents. The summers of my junior and senior years in High School I taught a whole bunch of my classmates to ski on Orange Lake. at 18 I joined the Navy. I’d come home on leave and go down to the lake skiing. When I returned in 1993 I lived in my Grandparents old house for the next 12 years. There were issues beyond my control that forced me to move away from the lake and I miss it terribly but I still have a cousin on the lake for when I need a fix. Sunset on Orange Lake outside of Newburgh. This is one of my favorite old photos. This pic is from 1995 1996 time frame. It was one of those days on the lake just perfect for sailing. Sailing Fast! My cousin had a prindle cat 16 and another neighbor on the lake had this Hobie 16. We all spent most of the day out on the lake racing. My cousin and another neighbor on the Prindle and the other neighbor and a friend on the Hobie. I was in a motor boat chasing them around most of the day taking pictures. I have a bunch of great shots from that day but, this is my favorite. Took this as the day was winding down. . A new technique an old technique that you learn to apply to new equipment, I used to have a Hassleblad medium format camera and thought was the greatest thing in the world.
