WILLIAM KLEIN «Dance in Brooklyn» (1955; printed 1978) Silver Gelatin HC
William Klein, Dance in Brooklyn, New York, 1955 Gelatin Silver Print From the portfolio New York 54/55. The portfolio contained twelve photographs that were made in 1978 by J. M. Bustamante under William Klein's supervision. All prints were processed to archival standards and the artist maintained that no further prints would be made from the negatives beyond this edition. (Klein reserved the right to produce large-scale prints larger than 32 inches.) Inscription on the back in marker identifies this as an Hors Commerce printing, not intended for sale, and outside the edition of 50. Curling at the edges, some marks from handling. Complete portfolios of the twelve photographs have sold for upwards of $30,000 at auction. Individual photographs have sold at auction for upwards of $3,750 each (in October 2023). At retail, they sell for far more. Since this printing is outside the official edition and slightly damaged, I am offering it for a lower price. (Booklet not included–only shown for reference.) Image: 7.375″ H x 11.625″ W Sheet: 12″ H x 16.875″ W Provenance: From the Estate of Charles Harbutt and Joan Liftin. Harbutt was an American photographer and former president of Magnum. He taught photography at Parsons School of Design in New York and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Center for Creative Photography, and many other major institutions. William Klein was a friend and his estate included photographs that Klein inscribed to him. Liftin was a photographer, editor, author, and director of the library of Magnum Photos. Her work is held in major collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Princeton University Museum, and the Center for Creative Photography, which now holds her archive.
