Vintage photograph of the ship «Transatlantic Hamburg» on the Rouge river in Detroit, Michigan. This photograph was taken in the 1950- 1970’s by Dick Pietrzyk. This photo is 13 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches matted on a 15×20 inch board. 1950 – 1970s Hamburg Ship – Great Lakes Tugboat River Rouge Large PhotoHamburg American Line was one of the major steamship companies to handle the immigrant trade. Their primary route was Hamburg to New York via Southampton. The Hamburg American Line was a World-Wide passenger and freight steamship company. The funnel was changed to the 3 colors in 1927.The “Transatlantic” was operating as early as 1954 (Canada) from newspaper records. This ship brought the German steel pilings for the St. Lawrence Seaway. The ship Transatlantic from Hamburg is a W. German ship from the Hamburg America(n) line. This ship was in Chicago in 1970 during the huge grain elevator explosion at dock.Donald Mareis from the ship tried to save one of the victims. That is all the information I could find out about this ship. It did, however, at one time haul steel and grain.The photo’s in the Rouge River, Michigan near Detroit. The Great Lakes Towing Company tugboats are the Maine, the Oregon and possibly the Michigan or Maryland in front. Maine: Maine was built in 1921 at their yard in Cleveland, OH. It was converted to diesel in 1951. In 1982 she was renamed Saipan. Oregon: This veteran tugboat was built in 1921 as the Oregon for the Great Lakes Towing Company in their Cleveland, Ohio yard. She was sold to the North Central Maritime Corp. of Duluth, Minnesota in 1978. This helps to determine that the photographs were before 1978.Maryland or MichiganBoth of these were also before 1983 About the artist: Richard «Dick’ Pietrzyk was born October 4th, 1926 and died May 3rd, 2009. He was never married, but served in the US Army in WWII from 2/27/1945 to 11/26/1946. He was a commercial artist living in Dearborn, Michigan. In the early 1950’s (1953,1955 and 1956) he was an artist at Academy Studio. By 1959 Dick was a commercial artist at Visual Design Inc. in Detroit. Visual Design Inc. opened in 1958. ***Each photograph is carefully wrapped in plastic then again in craft paper to assure protection during shipping.*** Thanks for viewing!!
