PLEASE NOTE this is a POSITIVE. Dimensions of the plaque: approximately 4.5 x 10.7 cm. Photo taken by a soldier photographer during the First World War. May 6, 1916, Sermaize, Somme, France. The image shows a scene of destruction, with partially destroyed buildings and ruins scattered on the ground. Chimneys and brick structures still remain standing, recalling traces of the original architecture, but many of the walls and structures appear to have been blown away or demolished. Soldiers or civilians appear in the scene, observing or passing through this environment marked by the ravages of war. The decor suggests an urban or industrial site which suffered heavy damage, probably during the fighting of the First World War.

La Maison de la Bonne Presse is a publishing house founded in July 1873. The company was called Maison de la Bonne Presse until 1969. The name of the group, considered a little outdated and possibly suggesting that the competition as a whole constituted “bad press”, changed in 1970 to Bayard Presse. A stop on the banks of the Sorgue, Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.

This plate comes from a private collection that belonged to a photographer collaborating with the Maison de la Bonne Presse. Founded in July 1873, Maison de la Bonne Presse was an important French publishing house. It had this name until 1969, before becoming Bayard Presse in 1970, in order to modernize its image. On a terrace overlooking the valleys, two young women pose side by side, dressed in traditional Alpine costumes: fitted bodice, white apron and dark skirt. Behind them, the snowy peaks are silhouetted in a soft light, probably those of the Bernese Oberland. The simplicity of their posture contrasts with the majesty of the setting: the mountain, eternal and imposing, facing ephemeral youth. This image illustrates both the attachment to local traditions and the wonder of Belle Épo.

The body of Christ, inert, is detached from the wood of torture. Men, perched on ladders, support his still nailed arms, while other disciples collect his body to give it to his mother and the holy women. Mary, standing at the back, contemplates in silent pain her Son who died for the salvation of men. – Detail: ladders, shroud linen, body of Christ surrounded by disciples and mourning women This scene, imbued with gravity and tenderness, translates both the end of the Passion.
