Black Hills Expedition Photo Site Calamity Peak & Permanent Camp Aug 1874 & 2020

The photo was taken on Calamity Peak, half a mile from the nearby Expedition camp site in the valley below, which was occupied from Aug. 1-5, 1874. It’s an interesting site for several reasons. Another feature of this view is the prominent dead tree, standing upright in 1874 but now leaning against a wall of granite with its base lodged in a small canyon about 30 feet deep, just beyond that edge in both photos.
