You are bidding on:Original Photographof CLAUDE CHABROLby Jerry Bauerc1960s Rare original photograph by Jerry Bauer ~ known within the literary world as the ultimate writers’ photographer ~ and also as a master of capturing his subjects in natural light.Period: 1960-1969. Vintage Print. Portrait of Claude Chabrol. Artist: Jerry Bauer (1934-2010). Total Dimensions & Image Size: 9.25 x 11.625 inches. Gelatin silver print on double weight paper. Titled in black ink with photographer’s copyright stamp verso.Claude Chabrol (1930 – 2010) was a French film director and a member of the French New Wave group of filmmakers who first came to prominence at the end of the 1950s. Like his colleagues and contemporaries Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, Chabrol was a critic for the influential film magazine Cahiers du cinéma before beginning his career as a film maker. Often labeled the «French Hitchcock». Hugely prolific (he made almost a film a year from 1958 until his death in 2010), he was a director of scrupulous formalism who, despite covering a wide variety of genres and subjects, always returned to thrillers that explored the darkness lurking just beneath the surface of the French bourgeoisie.~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~Bauer photographed many luminaries of literature as well as directors and opera singers ~ and yet he was not self-aggrandising. He left almost nothing of a footprint about himself (not even a self-portrait can be found online) but his body of work, which is slowly being revealed in time, speaks volumes. Much of his work still hides in the archives of publishing houses, or somewhere in Rome, or with family members. Yet – the occasional image of Jack Kerouac or Somerset Maugham can occasionally be found reproduced as a postcard. This photograph (as well as the others I’m listing) showed up at a Los Angeles street fair. Not all the writers (& celebrities) represented in this archive are household names ~ but all have created treasured works.
