ORIGINAL JAMES GITLITZ (1907-2002) ‘WAILING WALL IX’ JERUSELEM ISRAEL GELATIN SILVER PRINTThis is really a great piece. I have never had a work by James Gitlitz before. In fact, when I bought the photograph I was not sure who the photographer is. After doing research I learned that Gitlitz was a prominent attorney and photographer whose work was highly decorated as well as included in shows and permanent collections of institutions and museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For those not familiar with the photographer, I have included his biography below. This is a wonderful vintage gelatin silver print of children praying at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem Israel. Image measures 14 x 17 inches. Outstanding as printed condition. On its original matte signed and titled in pen below the image. Wonderful silver lined matte and silver frame are beautiful, complimentary and ready to hang. Frame measures 23 x 26 inches. His work appeared in various exhibits and acquired by museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Gitlitz served as chair of the Broome County Council of the State Commission for Human Rights and on the board of the Binghamton Public Library for 25 years. He helped to found the Interracial Association in 1933, a precursor of the Urban League. Gitlitz was educated at Cornell, receiving his B.A. in 1930 and his J.D. in 1933.
