My trip to Africa was the best trip of my life …so far. I prepared for a year. Each safari outing we went on was better than the one before. It was as if the animals and nature were preforming for my camera. I have been traveling and photographing locations and animals ever since I met my wife, Rebekah over 30 years ago. She had just been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa – A degenerative eye disease which will lead to blindness. When we met she could still see but the progression was just starting to occur. There is no cure, it just progresses at different rates for each person. This genetic disease is passed down through generations. The only way to stop it was to not have any children of our own. This was not an easy choice for me to come to terms with. I always thought I would have children. I came from a large family and thought that children was the natural way my life would progress. I feel the photographs I make are important as they are reminders for my wife to have of the places we saw when her sight was better. They now fill the walls of our home just as our friends have pictures of their children on their walls. At home when I look across the room and see a photograph that I took on one of our trips and describe what I see Rebekah will remember with her detailed recollections of her experience that are enriched by her other senses. She will remember sounds, smells and feelings that she had. She will even describe the meal in detail that she ate at the lodge that day. Hearing her take on the experience gives me a greater insight and perspective of her perception which brings us even closer as a couple. In my family my siblings have not had any children. I am the last youngest male in my family tree which means that without children my family name will end. I have nobody to pass my legacy of images onto.
